Chelsea fans are looking up from their pints here at the Football Transfer Tavern as it is claimed by Caught Offside that the club are considering a move for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.
The young Republic of Ireland international has been impressive this season and Chelsea officials have taken more than a lingering glance at the player who at 22-years-old could well be ready to move to the next level and join a club the size of Chelsea.
The West London club may not have officially appointed a new manager yet however it seems that given Rafael Benitez’ latest hint, Jose Mourinho will certainly be arriving in the summer and could well be have already identified McCarthy as one of his potential targets.
Arsenal are also thought to be interested in the player who has performed better with each ppassing season he has spent with Wigan in the Premier League and Arsene Wenger is known to be looking for a player in the mould of McCarthy meaning a summer bid is not out of the question either. With the Latics facing the drop this term, that may also force a move for McCarthy given the player would be reluctant to drop down into the Championship.
Will Chelsea shock us all by swooping to sign McCarthy this summer? Rate this rumour below.
