Jose Mourinho is someone who can always be relied on to shock us here in the Football Transfer Tavern, and after the latest claim from Metro, we think he could well be about to do that again.
The Chelsea manager is reportedly keen on bringing Inter Milan’s Javier Zanetti to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season – leading our punters to question just why that is, given the fact that Zanetti is not exactly a spring chicken.
Our landlord takes this moment to stop working behind the bar, come over to the pool table and share some of his knowledge with our regulars, and reminds us that Mourinho and the defender have an illustrious history.
Zanetti was of course a huge part of Mourinho’s treble winning side at Inter Milan, and the pair have remained close ever since.
As always with Jose, there is a long-term plan, and the Special One wants to bring Zanetti to the club for one season as a player, and then see him retire and join the backroom staff.
We think that it could be more likely that Mourinho will have to wait until the player hangs up his boots. Zanetti has made no secret about his desire to retire at the San Siro, and we think then he might consider joining up with Mourinho again.
Will Chelsea pull off a surprise swoop to land Zanetti? Let us know your thoughts below.
