The Daily Star has a shocking claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern and it is one that has put our punters on red alert.
The publication makes the comment that Xabi Alonso could well be set to run down his contract at Real Madrid and of course there will be no shortage of takers here in the Premier League, where the player spent a rather successful period of time.
Alonso’s current manager, Carlo Ancelotti claimed that: “The club has no further information regarding his renewal.
“But if he signs or not, he is our player until the summer of 2014 and if he is available, he will play.”
The midfielder is of course essential to the Real Madrid side, and despite the expensive acquisitions of the likes of Asier Illarramendi and also Casemiro, the 32-year-old is still the main man at the Bernabeu in the middle of the park.
Former club Liverpool have made no secret of their admiration of the player and Steven Gerrard has often spoken about wanting the Spaniard back at the club. Manchester United meanwhile are desperate to strengthen in the middle of the park and would throw their hat into the ring should the player become available.
Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are admirers of Alonso, who was one of the former Real Madrid manager’s staunchest defenders both on and off the field during Mourinho’s time at the club. Both are understood to be keen on a reunion.
Will we see Alonso in England again? Let us know your thoughts below.
