Chelsea have fallen behind Italian giants Inter Milan in the race to sign Chilean defender Igor Lichnovsky.
The 18-year-old centre back currently plays for Universidad de Chile where he rose through their youth system.
He has apparently been tracked by Chelsea for some time but some believe Inter Milan have sealed a £2m deal.
Lichnovsky has made 7 appearances for the first team this season and is a current Chile U-17 international.
The youngster is currently in the process of securing a Polish passport which would ease any deal involving a European club.
The centre back is 6ft 2ins and looks well built to cope with European football, if the rumours are to be true then how much of a lose will this youngster be to Chelsea?
In 5 years time we may be saying “what a player Chelsea missed out on” or we could be saying “Lucky escape for Chelsea” this is always the case when signing youngsters. John Obi Mikel is living proof that sometimes the player isn’t worth the fight, as Chelsea fought furiously to gain the midfielders signature and ended paying £16m for a player who years later is still not worth that.
Chelsea may well of missed out on a world beater with Lichnovsky but may also have had a lucky escape so who knows.
Maybe Chelsea should look within their own youth system for someone English or just good enough to make the step up instead of always looking outside their own house. A player such as Nathan Chabolah who has been tremendous for Chelsea’s reserve for some time now.
