The latest reports in today’s Daily Star have raised a few eyebrows in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The paper suggests that Chelsea will try to fend off strong competition from Arsenal and Manchester City to land Schalke wonderkid Julian Draxler in January.
Jose Mourinho will make an offer worth around £25 million to land the 20-year-old German international midfielder as he looks to further add to the growing ranks of fine young talents from around Europe at Stamford Bridge.
Draxler has already emerged as one of the brightest young prospects in the world, impressing in the Bundesliga and the Champions League for the Gelsenkirchen-based side. His ability to play behind the striker or as central midfielder would certainly offer Mourinho more options should injuries or suspensions come into play.
However Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has already denied reports that he could leave for Premier League in January, as the player looks to continue his fine form in Germany ahead of a likely selection in the German squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
“Julian Draxler will be at our club this season, that is for sure,” Heldt stated.
“There will be no fuss regarding him during the January window as he is committed to our club.”
However with speculation picking up in the tavern this evening we could yet see a transfer battle in January as the top Premier League sides fight it out for the hugely talented German.
