Chelsea: Lyon plan January swoop for Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud has struggled for game-time at Chelsea this season due to the scintillating form of Tammy Abraham.

The French marksman joined the Blues from Arsenal last year and enjoyed a promising debut season in west London, registering 13 goals and 10 assists for the club in all competitions (via Transfermarkt). Now, according to Soccer Link, the former Montpellier ace could be a target for Ligue 1 side Lyon, who are reported to have opened discussions with his agent.

Giroud finished the campaign as the leading goalscorer in the Europa League with 11 goals to his name, as Chelsea won the competition by convincingly beating his previous club, Arsenal, 4-1 in the final.

That was before the days of Frank Lampard and his crop of exciting young prospects, however. Since the club took charge of the club, a new approach has been undertaken at Stamford Bridge, and it has been working a treat.

The likes of Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham – three players who spent last season on loan with Championship suitors – have all been given opportunities to prove themselves in the club’s first-team and each have excelled when called upon.

In the case of striker Abraham, the success that the young striker has endured so far this term – scoring eight league goals and earning himself a senior England call-up – has seen the ageing Giroud cast aside.

The 33-year-old has been limited to just one start for the Blues in the Premier League this season and Michy Batshuayi was brought on as the Blues chased the game against Ajax recently, suggesting even he is further ahead of the World-Cup winner in the pecking order.

The situation for Giroud at Chelsea must be frustrating for the player, though with Tammy Abraham’s form considered it is difficult to build an argument against the 21-year-old starting ahead of him at the moment.

According to the report, Didier Deschamps has told him he needed to start more games in order to keep his place in the national team set-up, so perhaps that pressure could see him leave London for his homeland.
