The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are cautiously optimistic ahead of the new season…
A loss against Arsenal in the Community Shield was disappointing, to say the least, but with key players like Alvaro Morata and Tiemoue Bakayoko coming in, there is still cause for optimism at Stamford Bridge.
One key issue that Chelsea will clearly need to deal with is their lack of squad depth, though, and the Blues’ captain Gary Cahill has recently been discussing that matter.
According to the Evening Standard, he said: “In terms of quality we’ve certainly got that but you have to hope we don’t have too many injuries…There’s no doubt we’ve added quality to the team”.
Elaborating, he continued: “But with playing more games due to the Champions League this season, the numbers are going to be tested. We just have to keep everybody fit and sharp”.
Cahill makes a good point, especially when you consider the return of the Champions League which gets underway in just over a month. Chelsea are clearly stretched, but with several weeks to go until the window shuts, there is more than enough time for the Blues to get enough business done.
Conte is also an expert at team fitness, and so will need to focus on this all season long.
Still, it is a very real and genuine concern for Antonio Conte, and one that he must deal with.
At present, Chelsea’s squad simply is not good enough. Conte could rely on a small squad last season, but that was because the Blues rarely had to compete on more than one front.
This season will be very different, and given the focus that the Blues often place upon the Champions League, it is going to be even more difficult.
It is essential that the club recruit between now and the end of the window, with improvements needed throughout the squad.
