The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were very impressed with Gary Cahill last season…
He was a regular for the Blues under Antonio Conte, delivering fine performances in a new-look Chelsea defence alongside the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz.
For many in the Transfer Tavern, Cahill is the heir apparent to John Terry – with his nationality, consistency and leadership all drawing parallels with the Chelsea legend.
It is the latter of those qualities that relate to Chelsea’s latest announcement, though, with the Blues confirming this week that Cahill has been named Chelsea’s new captain following Terry’s departure.
Discussing the decision with Chelsea’s official website, the Englishman struggled to hide his happiness: “I felt every emotion [when he heard the news]. I was delighted, proud, excited and looking forward to it”.
He also mentioned that even though Terry has left the club, he’d have no problem contacting him for advice: “If I get in any sticky situations I’m sure he [Terry] is one of the first people I will be on the phone to, but I doubt he’ll mind that”.
Though Cahill has been a divisive figure in the past, he had a very good last campaign, and Conte clearly rates him as a top defender.
Cahill is the natural fit for this role, as he proved last season. He led the side through a stellar campaign last term, and so it’s no real surprise that Antonio Conte has decided for him to continue in that vein going forward.
Like with Terry, though, being the captain doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a regular starter, and so Cahill will have to ensure that he keeps up his fine performances next term.
With Antonio Rudiger on his tail, nothing is guaranteed.
