The Premier League title race is really hotting up after Manchester City eased past Manchester United last night with Liverpool hosting Sunderland tonight.
The three-horse race is one of the most exciting for years and seems likely to go right to the wire with all three contenders in fantastic form.
However according to the latest reports in the Football Transfer Tavern, it won’t be just on the pitch where City will be looking to beat Chelsea with talkSPORT suggesting that the two club’s will fight it out for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in the summer.
We watched the weekend’s El Clasico on Sunday night and were thoroughly impressed by the Frenchman who struck twice for Carlo Ancelotti’s side despite their defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona.
It was thought that this return to form at the Bernabeu would put an end to all talk about him moving to the Premier League but today’s speculation indicates that he could depart with just a year remaining on his existing contract.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a world-class striker and has a strong working relationship with Benzema while City are understood to be tracking the 26-year-old who could be available for around £40 million.
His agent Jonathan Hope has been touting his client, saying: “I’ve proposed rekindling the interest from Manchester City for Karim. After his fine form in El Clasico I’ve proposed him as a summer target.
“Karim would love to play in the Premier League and Manchester City would be his choice of club, however reuniting with Mourinho at Chelsea would also be of interest.”
