Chelsea are reportedly in talks with Mason Mount over a new contract.
And with Frank Lampard now at the helm (per Football.London), the man who oversaw his development at Pride Park, the 20-year-old is said to be feeling optimistic about his chances at Stamford Bridge.
Following Lampard’s apparent appointment as manager, this move makes complete sense. The 41-year-old clearly rates the Chelsea youngster highly after working with him at Derby.
At the start of the Championship campaign, Lampard told Sky Sports: “He [Mount] can be really good, he can be top, top level because he’s 19 and plays with ability and quality, technically he’s brilliant but also his work-rate shouldn’t go unnoticed.
“He’s so quick to leave midfield to go and press people whether it be defenders or deep-lying midfield players which makes you the all-round midfield player.”
When you consider that, the above development is surely not a surprise as Lampard looks to shape his Chelsea team.
As well as words, numbers have also made a good case for Mount. For example, he averaged 1.9 key passes per game in the Championship last term. Albeit in a weaker division, that was still more than what any other Chelsea midfielder averaged, with N’Golo Kante’s 1.3 coming the closest (as per WhoScored).
It suggests that in Mount, Chelsea are trying to tie down a creative midfield option, who could have another role to play under Lampard.
