Chelsea may finally seal vital striker move on one condition, deal discussed over the weekend – report

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned that, with just a few days to go until the transfer window slams shut, their side is yet to bring in any players beyond Ross Barkley. Chelsea are lacking quality in a few positions at present, with no area proving to be more problematic than the attack.

Chelsea’s current two striking options, Michy Batshuayi and Alvaro Morata, are both misfiring at present, and so it’s clear that improvement is needed.

Fortunately, according to the Daily Mail, the Blues could get their wish. The Daily Mail report that Chelsea could secure a deal for Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud before the end of the month – on one condition. It is said that Arsenal may let him go if the Blues meet their £35 million valuation, with the Chelsea brass reportedly discussing the prospect of signing him over the weekend.

Giroud has, of course, been a regular at Arsenal for much of his career, but the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette has seen him fall in significance quite considerably.

At 6ft2, Giroud would certainly offer something different for Antonio Conte, with the Frenchman providing a far more dominant aerial threat than any of Chelsea’s current two options. The signing of a forward is vital for the Blues as they look to bulk out their attacking options.

Arsenal will, of course, be hesitant to sell to a Premier League rival, hence the high valuation – and so whether Chelsea make their move remains to be seen.

Landlord’s Verdict

In theory, this is a deal that makes sense. Giroud is tall, strong and aerially dominant, and so he’d provide Antonio Conte with that route one option that he likely craves. Furthermore, Arsenal appear willing to cash in given that their valuation is met.

However, purely from a financial standpoint, spending £35 million on a player that is already in his 30s – especially one that is struggling for game time at the Emirates – might not be so wise.

The Blues need depth, though, and so they may have little choice.
