The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern would be disappointed to see this club legend leave…
John Obi Mikel is a very divisive figure amongst the Chelsea faithful.
His performances in big games, such as the Champions League final in 2012, have endeared him to a large majority of the Chelsea faithful – whilst other fans in the Tavern feel that his time at Stamford Bridge is up.
Certainly, Mikel’s game time has reduced over the last few years in favour of new stars like Nemanja Matic – but the Nigerian midfielder has been a consistent part of the Chelsea first-team setup for over a decade.
However, that now looks like it could change – with the 2016/17 season looking likely to be the Nigerian stalwart’s final year in London, with his contract set to finish at the end of the season.
Speaking to Goal.com, Mikel has revealed that he could leave Chelsea upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season, with discussions with other clubs likely to begin in January.
“When you have a year left as a football player, you have to start planning” he said.
He continued: “In January, you are allowed to talk to other clubs…so, yes, I will talk to other clubs because you never know what is going to happen”.
Despite his intent to finalise his future, Mikel has, however, not ruled out a longer tenure with the Blues.
“I am always open to a new conversation, a negotiation [with Chelsea]” he confirmed.
Some very interesting quotes from Mikel there.
Our landlord thinks that a departure is the most likely scenario at the moment. Mikel has been back from international duty for a couple of weeks but is still yet to good a look in under Antonio Conte.
With players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesc Fabregas and Nathaniel Chalobah ahead of the Nigerian in the pecking order; a January discussion into a move away looks likely.
Chelsea fans – thoughts? Do you want Mikel to stay?
