Sky Sports have reported that Aleksandr Golovin has sealed a switch to Monaco this summer, despite apparent heavy interest from Chelsea.
The Russian starred at this summer’s World Cup in his homeland, and it was always only a matter of time before he left CSKA Moscow and the Russian Premier Liga behind in order to make the step up to a more major European league.
With Chelsea having missed out on their target, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri will now be considering his options.
One route to take would be identifying an alternative target and moving to sign them instead. Otherwise, Sarri could opt for an internal solution.
If the manager decides to go with the latter, then he’ll be glad to find the answer to his midfield quandary already on the books at Stamford Bridge in the form of Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Loftus-Cheek was another who featured at the World Cup just gone by, and the 22-year-old has been impressing plenty with his performances for the Three Lions recently.
The midfielder has caught the eye for being able to replicate the great form he produced whilst on loan with Crystal Palace last season at international level.
The 6’3” powerhouse has a diverse and impressive range of attributes. Beyond his remarkable strength and physicality, which allows him to hold off challenges and dominate aerial duels, the Chelsea man is also exceptionally tidy in possession. Loftus-Cheek has a habit of racking up excellent pass completion statistics, without sacrificing his instincts to play the ball forwards and create opportunities.
If Sarri sees fit to give Loftus-Cheek the chance to establish himself at Stamford Bridge he has waited so long for, then he’ll be adding a healthy injection of both silk and steel to his midfield, without it costing the club a penny.
