Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling optimistic following a magnificent run of form which has put them within touching distance of the Premier League top four.
A 1-0 victory over top-four rivals Liverpool has put the Reds under immense pressure as the season comes to a close. Chelsea know if they fail to beat Brighton on the final day of the season and the Blues pick up wins over Huddersfield and Newcastle – they will guarantee Champions League football at Stamford Bridge.
Following last season’s title triumph, Antonio Conte did not strengthen the right areas which allowed Manchester City to run away with the league unchallenged this campaign. Finishing in the top four is vital for Conte as he looks to attract Europe’s biggest names this summer. One summer signing who has failed to hit the ground running is Alvaro Morata – who cost the Blues a whopping £56m in the summer.
Rumours suggest the Spaniard could be set to return to Juventus when the window reopens meaning Chelsea will be on the lookout for a new number nine. Olivier Giroud has been an effective option off the bench but lacks the quality to lead the line. Instead, Conte should do everything in his power to sign Bayern Munich forward – Robert Lewandowski.
Valued at £81m by Transfermarkt, the Pole is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world. His goal return for Bayern Munich is extraordinary – he has scored 29 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances on the way to his sixth Bundesliga trophy. The 29-year-old also has five goals in the Champions League.
Signing Lewandowski would be a huge statement of intent to Chelsea’s Premier League rivals. Lewandowski is a world-class finisher and would thrive alongside Eden Hazard and Willian. The Blues would face competition from big teams for his signature but will be encouraged at reports suggesting the Poland international is unhappy in Bavaria.
He wouldn’t be cheap, but he could fire them to another Premier League trophy.
