The Chelsea fans in the Transfer tavern have been impressed by the performances of Kenedy since he left the club for Newcastle on a short-term loan deal in January, but they are open to the possibility of offloading him this summer.
Kenedy has been a revelation at St James’ Park since he arrived at the club in the mid-season window whilst operating in a left-midfield role. The Brazilian was widely considered to be a full-back when he left Stamford Bridge, but the quality of his form in a more advanced position suggests he should remain there for the foreseeable future.
However, Chelsea’s system of operating with full-backs could leave Kenedy surplus to requirements this summer, and if that proves to be the case then they should use him as a makeweight in a deal for Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles. According to the London Evening Standard, Chelsea have prioritised the signing of Lascelles (valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt) this summer over the highly sought-after Dutch talent Matthijs de Ligt, which is a wise stance to take considering the level of interest Ajax’s prodigy is commanding.
Lascelles has proven his quality in the top-flight this season by consistently leading by example at the heart of the Magpies’ defence, although he has been overlooked by Gareth Southgate for England selection. His form more than merits a transfer to a top-six club, but it’s unlikely that Newcastle will be even willing to entertain offers for his services.
Chelsea will certainly need to make a huge offer to tempt Newcastle into a potential deal, but they might be able to reduce the financial burden by offering Kenedy as a makeweight during negotiations. Kenedy rapidly established himself as a fan-favourite on Tyneside during his loan spell, and his performances were widely considered as a fundamental reason for Newcastle’s climb up the table during the final months of the season.
Naturally, the supporters would love to see him return next season, as would the club’s hierarchy. It would still take a massive offer to prise Newcastle’s captain away from the club even if they offer Kenedy in part exchange, but Chelsea simply must include him within their initial offer to stand any chance of luring Lascelles to Stamford Bridge this summer.
