The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are already looking ahead to what their team may look to do in the summer. It’s fair to say that their season hasn’t gone to plan so far this season, so it’s quickly becoming a bit of a write-off for Antonio Conte, particularly if they can’t get past Barcelona in the Champions League. As a result, it makes sense for the Blues to begin preparing for next season already.
This is something that the journalists over at the Evening Standard have been doing recently, with Vaishali Bhardwaj recently discussing Chelsea’s plans. One significant point that she made was regarding Gary Cahill, and the notion that Chelsea must decide whether it’s worth keeping him – alongside David Luiz – on long-term.
Of course, his form has dipped this season, and given that his contract expires in 2019 – the summer will be a crucial time for the Englishman. However, despite all of that, in the opinion of our landlord, Chelsea should move to tie down Cahill long-term as soon as possible.
After all, he’s the captain of the club. Following the departure of John Terry, the Blues have very little charisma, leadership and passion – and Cahill delivers that in droves. It’s no coincidence that he was Terry’s vice-captain. In many ways, he’s a very similar player – albeit with less consistency. Terry wasn’t the most gifted footballer, but he more than made up for that in the led the team and commanded respect – and Cahill has a similar effect on the team.
Losing him would create a huge gulf in leadership, and that’s something that the Blues cannot afford to lose.
Not to mention, though he’s divisive amongst fans, you can’t deny his quality on the field when it really matters. Like every top player, he steps up to the plate when it matters. Look back to 2012, when he kept the rampaging Bayern Munich attack at bay with relative ease. He’s shown glimpses of that this season, too, and he was one of Chelsea’s best players last term.
Sure, at 32-year-old, Cahill is edging closer to the end of his career – but it would be a massive mistake for Chelsea to move him on anytime soon. They simply must keep him, even if Luiz needs to be sacrificed as a result.
