The Chelsea fans are growing increasingly concerned in the Transfer Tavern due to rumours linking Willian with a move away from the club next summer.
It’s been a relatively miserable few weeks for our resident Blues in the tavern, but the performances of Willian have stood out as a notable bright spark throughout a difficult period for Chelsea Football Club. The Brazilian international has often been overlooked by Antonio Conte, much to the surprise of supporters from outside of the club more than fans of Chelsea themselves, but he has proven his credentials as one of the clubs most devastating attacking talents recently with a pair of standout performances against Barcelona and Manchester United.
In the modern era it seems that only a handful of eye-catching performances are necessary to provoke speculation regarding a player’s future, and Willian has been no exception to that rule this week. According to The Daily Star, Willian is a potential target for Manchester United in the summer, although they face competition from AC Milan for his signature.
United’s interest is certainly plausible considering Mourinho’s history of working alongside the Corinthians academy product, but Conte will certainly not be surrendering one of the clubs prized possession without a fight. However, in the event that Willian opts to depart the club next summer, whether it be to Manchester United or not, Chelsea will need to replace him with a player of true quality.
One player who Conte would be wise to consider signing is Willian’s fellow compatriot Malcom (valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt), who is currently playing his trade for Bordeaux in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old is no stranger to links with Premier League clubs, as The Independent have claimed the Brazilian is a target for both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur next summer.
So far this season, Malcom has scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in all-competitions – a deeply impressive return considering his age and Bordeaux’s standing in Ligue 1. In the current market there are very few players who can boast the same level of potential as Malcom, and considering the club have reportedly agreed to let him pursue a fresh challenge this summer, Conte would be foolish not to approach him in the event of Willian’s departure.
