Chelsea: My job is to look at the academy – Petr Cech -Chelsea

Petr Cech has shed more light on what his responsibilities as Chelsea’s new technical and performance advisor are set to entail, with the 37-year-old set to work closely with the club’s academy.

Cech was handed the position last month following his exit from Arsenal and retirement from the game and has since given an interview with Czech News Agency about his new position.

“When I decide I want something to work in some way, I have to go to the club management first to allow it. I’m new to the role. But I have enough possibilities to influence the club, which is a great responsibility and I like it,” Cech explained to Czech News Agency (via Goal).

“My job description is to look at the first team, the academy, the transfer policy, the data from training. The range is broad, occupying all the disciplines that belong to football. My job is to report and especially bring ideas.”

With Chelsea currently under a transfer embargo, there is likely to be an emphasis on the club’s academy products this summer, and some supporters will surely be dying to see Cech help bridge that gap at Cobham between the academy and the first team — something the Evening Standard have also highlighted.

Last season, the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek really made an impact in the first team and were the first Chelsea homegrown products to do so since John Terry. Hudson-Odoi’s impressive emergence saw him make his England debut at just 18, while Loftus-Cheek managed to come up with some big goals at the business end of the campaign.

He scored a late winner in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City and the opening goal in a 3-0 victory over Watford after Chelsea had endured a difficult first half.

Confirming he will be involved in the academy, Cech will surely be hoping to see more Chelsea youngsters stake a claim in the first team in the near future.
