Chelsea got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over a resurgent Everton at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of Nicolas Jackson’s first goal of 2025.

Showing no signs of a player who hadn’t found the net since mid-December, the Senegalese star struck the game’s only goal in the 27th minute, collecting a pass from Enzo Fernandez before rifling a wicked shot into the bottom corner of Jordan Pickford’s net from the edge of the area.

Speaking after the match, Jackson revealed his relief and delight at finally getting back on the scoresheet after what has been a difficult few months plagued by poor form and injury setbacks.

“I’m very happy that we won and I scored. I think I’ve hit the post [trying the same thing] like three times, so I’m happy I scored and we won,” he said.

While it was a day to remember for Jackson, Chelsea’s wingers once again struggled to make an impact.

Noni Madueke, starting on the left of the Blues’ attack, spurned several good chances, while Pedro Neto on the opposite flank failed to register a single shot on goal in 90 minutes.

Jadon Sancho, meanwhile, was given just 12 minutes off the bench and barely touched the ball, making only two passes in his brief cameo.

Chelsea open talks with Jamie Gittens

The form of Chelsea’s wingers has been a major concern this season, with Madueke, Sancho, and Neto all experiencing brief purple patches followed by long stretches of minimal goal contributions.

Compounding the problem, Mykhailo Mudryk has spent the majority of the season sidelined after failing a drugs test, with his return date still uncertain. It’s clear the wings are a major problem area the Blues must address in the summer transfer window.

Fortunately, according to TalkSPORT, they are already making moves, having reportedly “opened talks” with Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens over a potential £35 million switch to West London.

Gittens, formerly of Manchester City, has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring 12 goals — including a memorable strike against Real Madrid in the Champions League — and registering five assists. However, his role has diminished since the appointment of Niko Kovac in January.

TalkSPORT claims that his limited minutes in recent weeks, combined with Dortmund’s risk of missing out on next season’s Champions League, could pave the way for a move to Chelsea.

Gittens, who has been linked with the Blues for a few months now, was highly thought of by his former Dortmund boss, Nuri Şahin, whom Kovac replaced earlier this year.

“He’s a very important player for us. Jamie himself wants to take the next step, and we want him to take that step,” Şahin said. “Now he’s scoring goals and playing more mature football. It’s not news to me that he’s incredible one-on-one and is a very good finisher.”

If Gittens does make the move, what is Dortmund’s loss could certainly be Chelsea’s gain.
