Juan Mata could well be set to remain a Chelsea player – at least for now should we in the Football Transfer Tavern believe the latest claim from the Daily Mail.
The latest rumour surrounding the Blues’ number 10 was that a loan move to Serie A could be on the cards, with former interim manager at Chelsea, Rafael Benitez keen on bringing the player to Napoli in order to boost their title hopes.
However, as one of our punters quips, Chelsea have no reason to lend out a player, especially to Benitez – who we all know enjoys a rather frosty relationship with Jose Mourinho.
Mata has made it clear he is unhappy with his bit part role at Stamford Bridge, yet over the festive period has ranked in the top three forwards in terms of minutes on the field – and done very little with it.
A permanent move to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain or Atletico Madrid has also been mooted and smart money seems to be on that happening in the summer.
Chelsea are still challenging on multiple fronts and need all their quality players – including Mata – who Mourinho is keen to keep.
The likeable Spaniard himself is concerned over his World Cup chances and given how strong the Spanish squad is, that comes as no big shock. Mata knows he has to play and feels the best chance of that happening is with a move away.
Will Mourinho keep Mata as his best option on the bench? Let us know your thoughts below.
