Chelsea: Petr Cech must stop club from signing mediocre players

He is back! No, not Frank Lampard, but rather Petr Cech.

Chelsea confirmed earlier today that their former goalkeeper has been appointed as the club’s ‘Technical and Performance Advisor’. But just what job responsibilities will he hold at Stamford Bridge?

Well according to Evening Standard journalist Simon Johnson, fans can expect Cech to have a role when it comes to the club’s transfer plans.

With the Blues, of course, currently banned from signing players, it might not be the busiest of summers for him in that regard. But going forward, when it is time to really get stuck in, Cech must make sure he stops Director Marina Granovskaia and Head of International Scouting Scott McLachlan from bringing in any more mediocre players.

For the last few years now, a lot of Chelsea’s signing have simply not been good enough. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Davide Zappacosta have all been brought in — for big money — and have not made the Blues any better.

Arriving for a combined fee of over £90m (as per Transfermarkt), the trio have been an absolute waste of investment. With that sort of money, Chelsea could have easily brought in a world-class attacker who would have been able to ease the burden on Eden Hazard.

Instead, they spent it on three individuals who were nowhere near the first team last season. In Bakayoko’s case, he was not even at the club.

If Cech is to be a success in his new role, then he has to steer the Premier League outfit away from making such disastrous signings.
