We at the Football Transfer Tavern were more than a little confused when we heard Chelsea had made a bid for Jack Butland, but according to a story in the Metro we can see how it all makes sense now.
Chelsea of course have one of the highest rated keepers around in Petr Cech and also the best young keeper – Thibaut Courtois on loan at Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Why then would they even entertain a bid for another young keeper we asked? Well according to the press today Chelsea are willing to allow Belgian international Courtois to join Atleti permanently as a good will gesture in order to land their number one target Radamel Falcao.
Falcao of course is the top hitman in Europe at the minute and is on just about everyone’s wish list, meaning that he will not come easily or cheaply. Chelsea are long-term admirers of the Colombian international and are willing to pay a hefty amount in cash while also letting such a top player leave in order to secure his services.
Whilst Atleti are reluctant to let their top man go, they are almost resigned to it and fully understand that they need to get the best deal possible in order to allow their promising squad to progress under Argentine manager Diego Simeone. Securing Courtois would go a long way to doing this, especially as the Belgian is also reportedly interesting Barcelona according to Marca.
