The latest speculation has caused quite a stir in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon.
The news reported by German newspaper Bild is that Chelsea are set to rival Arsenal in their pursuit for Schalke star Julian Draxler and are prepared to send young winger Kevin De Bruyne as part of a stunning swap deal.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is one of the hottest properties in Europe after making his breakthrough into the Bundesliga side’s first team in 2011, before helping them qualify for the Champions League last term.
Chelsea fans have already seen the young German in person this season as Schalke travelled to Stamford Bridge as part of the Champions League group stage and were impressed again last night as the young German put his team ahead in their 2-0 victory over Basel.
Despite this success in the elite European competition, it appears that Draxler is becoming increasingly frustrated at being played out of position by Jens Keller and admitted his concerns earlier this week.
Now according to German sources, Chelsea will seek to end his time in Germany by offering talented winger De Bruyne as part of the package to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
He is known to have a £40 million buy out clause in his contract that still has four years to run and that means Schalke will be expecting a large fee for their young star.
However the starlet has conceded that he would like to play for the biggest clubs in the world, with Arsenal and Manchester United strongly rumoured with future moves.
He said: “I’m telling you honestly that my dream is to play for one of the big clubs at some point.
“If you want to achieve the big goals, which every world class player has, you have to play at the biggest clubs.
“These are Real, Barca, [Manchester] United, Arsenal and Chelsea.”
The Blues will now hope to fend off all rival parties by including De Bruyne, who impressed at Werder Bremen last season, as a way to persuade the German side to finally sell Draxler.
