As we well know football doesn’t sleep and despite being Christmas Day in the Football Transfer Tavern, that hasn’t stopped the endless transfer speculation from arriving into the bar.
The main story that has really caught the eye today comes from The Mirror who suggest that Chelsea are plotting a raid on Benfica to sign Lazar Markovic and Nemanja Matic in January.
It appears that the Portuguese giant’s financial crisis could see them offloading some of their stars in the New Year with Jose Mourinho planning to take advantage with a double bid.
Matic, who moved to Benfica as part of the David Luiz deal in 2011, could now return to Stamford Bridge after two years away as Mourinho seeks extra depth in midfield.
While Serbian winger Lazer Markovic, who only joined Jorge Jesus’s side in the summer. could also come as part of a January package with a £12 million price tag reportedly placed on the 19-year-old. He has impressed in his first season with the club after joining from Partizan Belgrade.
The Blues could yet face interest from Manchester United in both Benfica players with David Moyes also looking to strengthen his side in the upcoming transfer window.
