Chelsea fans are looking rather dubious here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they look up from their pints to hear the latest claim from The Guardian.
The publication have claimed that Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema may well have caught the eye of Jose Mourinho – and be subject to a £40 million bid.
Now whilst a link with Benzema may appease the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea fans aim for slightly more in their summer recruitment process and the question of just why Real Madrid are looking to let Benzema go comes to our landlord.
He informs us that whilst Benzema does a job, Carlo Ancelotti is looking for a truly world class forward in the mould of a Luis Suarez or a Sergio Aguero – exactly what Chelsea fans want to see arriving at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Benzema knows Mourinho well having played under him for three seasons – and as we are reminded by one of our regulars, the French international, who is regularly booed by his own fans when on international duty – was once called a cat by Mourinho when his favourite forward, Gonzalo Higuain was unavailable.
Mourinho lamented the fact he could not hunt with a dog, thus had to turn to his cat. Mind you, this season he has been turning to the likes of what we can only assume would be compared to a mouse, so anything is a step up from there.
Would Benzema do a good job for Chelsea or should they insist on signing one of either Edinson Cavani or Diego Costa? Let us know your thoughts below.
