Big money transfers are on the mind of the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, with the Blues clearly in need of a few major signings this summer.
However, with no Champions League football on the horizon, holding on to their most important players is every bit as important as signing new ones. Fortunately, they could be able to do both with one of their planned summer moves.
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea have made Polish forward Robert Lewandowski their priority transfer target this summer, with the highly-rated, lethal and energetic forward clearly making an impression on the Chelsea brass.
However, perhaps more importantly, a move for Lewandowski could also have an impact on the future of Eden Hazard, and even Thibaut Courtois. The Telegraph report that both players are waiting to see the club’s ambitions before committing their future – and a signing of Lewandowski’s calibre could serve to do just that.
There’s no doubting that the Pole is amongst Europe’s best forwards, and after another stunning Bundesliga season – with 29 league goals – it’s clear that he’d be a star in the heart of the Chelsea attack.
Chelsea’s attack has, of course, struggled this season, with Alvaro Morata looking particularly poor. A move for Lewandowski would undoubtedly have an impact on his prospects at Stamford Bridge, either by giving him further competition or even by forcing him out.
The futures of both Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard must be the priority for Chelsea this summer. They don’t get more important than that duo.
Signing top quality, proven talent will likely be enough to prove that the Blues are serious, though it remains to be seen as to whether either player will seek a departure.
Chelsea appear to be trying, though, and so fans can’t ask for much more.
