The Daily Mirror are reporting that Chelsea are set to make a £30 million offer for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard this summer in an attempt to pry the England star away from his beloved Liverpool and to boost Chelsea’s midfield. Chelsea pursued Gerrard a few years ago but the now-29 year old famously turned them down in the hopes of winning something with Liverpool.
Liverpool’s failure to win anything recently and their inability to compete for the Premiership title this season has led to insecurities that Gerrard will be willing to leave in a desperate attempt to win silverware before he retires. Whilst he would be very reluctant to leave Liverpool Gerrard is aware that he is nearing 30 and won’t have many more chances to get his hands on valuable trophies, most importantly the elusive Premiership title.
Chelsea are supposed to be under a transfer embargo in the summer but the club seem to be disregarding the ruling and are already making plans for new signings. Sources supposedly close to Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti have claimed that Gerrard is one of the top names being linked with the club with his ability to drive his team forward and his goalscoring ability having impressed Ancelotti enough to re-open the club’s interest in the attacking midfielder.
Gerrard only signed a new contract with Liverpool back in the summer which means that Liverpool are under no obligation to sell but, much like with Xabi Alonso who left to Real Madrid last summer, if Gerrard told the club that he wanted to leave they’d be unlikely to stand in his way after all he has done for the club. Whether he would give up his boyhood heroes for silverware is yet to be seen though.
