Chelsea are prepared to pay £21 million to bring Benfica star Nemanja Matic back to the club during the January transfer window, according to today’s Sunday Telegraph.
Jose Mourinho will be satisfied with his side’s recent run of form but he reportedly still wants to bolster his central midfield options.
Today’s speculation indicates that the former Chelsea youngster has now been outlined as the prime target.
In recent weeks the Blues have been increasingly linked to the Serbian international and momentum is gathering with a possible bid on the horizon.
Matic, who left Chelsea as part of the £25m deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge in 2011, could now return as a 25-year-old who has established himself as a highly-regarded midfielder in Portugal.
While Manchester United manager David Moyes is thought to keeping tabs on Matic, but the Benfica ace would prefer a move back to his former club, having already stated his desire to return back to the Premier League.
It’s not yet clear whether the Primeira Liga giants will accept Chelsea’s £21 million offer, with the Portuguese club likely to hold out for a fee closer to his £37 million release clause.
But it’s certainly caused an extra interest in Benfica’s game against Porto that is being screened in the bar.
