There’s a few whispers in the Football Transfer Tavern today that incoming Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants to challenge Arsenal for Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic.
The Express reports that Mourinho, who will join on a four-year contract after Real Madrid’s last game against Osasuna on Saturday, will launch a shock £25 million bid to snatch Jovetic away from Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.
It was hoped by Gunners fans that the signature of the Montenegrin striker would be sealed in the coming weeks but talks between the parties have stalled with Arsenal unwilling to match the Serie A club’s asking price.
Chelsea could now make their move after seeing long-term target Radamel Falcao seemingly complete his £51 million signing from Atletico Madrid to Monaco yesterday, while Edinson Cavani of Napoli is thought to be too expensive at £52 million while commanding massive £250,000-a-week wages.
A source close to the Blues said: “Jovetic is a definite option for Chelsea. Cavani at the moment is too expensive.”
The 23-year-old forward is understood to be available for around £25 million and that could make him an attractive option to the Stamford Bridge outfit this summer.
Will Chelsea beat the Gunners to his signature? Is he even the striker Chelsea desperately need? Rate this rumour below.
