It has been a good couple of weeks for Chelsea, with Antonio Conte’s men seemingly past a rather tough spell that was compounded by a disappointing loss to Manchester City. Though that game suggested that the Blues were a few steps behind their rivals, they’ve really turned it around during their last few games – with big wins against the likes of Watford and Bournemouth in recent weeks.
One player that has been crucial throughout Chelsea’s recent resurgence is Cesc Fabregas. Though not a regular last term, he’s featured from the start in nearly every Premier League game so far this season, with Antonio Conte clearly valuing him very highly despite his initial scepticism last term. In fact, he likes having him in his side so much that he is keen to ensure that he remains there for the foreseeable future. According to the Times, Chelsea are ready to offer Fabregas a new contract at Chelsea both as a means of highlighting his importance to the team and also to ward off potential interest from the likes of Man Utd.
Based on current form, Fabregas does deserve a new deal. The Spaniard has impressed through the middle this term alongside the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko and N’Golo Kante, and he has worked increasingly hard to stand out defensively alongside those two midfield marvels.
The timing of this deal also makes sense, as his current contract expires at the end of next season. If they wait much longer, the Blues could have to contend with the prospect of losing him on a free, and given how highly publicised the saga surrounding Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal is, this is something that the Blues will be keen to avoid.
In this instance, a new deal probably suits all parties. Fabregas will want to extend his stay at the highest level, particularly given his importance to the team, and judging by how many games he has played, Antonio Conte clearly wants him involved too.
He’s getting on in years, but quality-wise, he is seemingly only getting better.
