Chelsea: Reece James is set to earn a new contract over the coming months

Reece James is set to be offered a new deal by Chelsea in the coming months, according to The Telegraph.

Premiership Picks

The 19-year-old, who is now understudy to first-choice right-back Cesar Azpilicueta at Stamford Bridge, will reportedly be offered a new contract which will see his weekly wage drastically rise.

James is currently the lowest-paid member of Chelsea’s first-team squad (via the Express), with his new deal set to represent his value and importance to Frank Lampard’s squad.

The England U20 international spent the entirety of last season on loan at Wigan Athletic, where he scored three goals and provided three assists for the Latics as they finished 18th in the Championship and avoided relegation to League One.

With Chelsea currently under a transfer ban, manager Frank Lampard will be forced to rely on some of the club’s younger players this season.

Tammy Abraham was handed the No.9 shirt earlier this summer, and opened his Premier League account for Chelsea with a well-taken brace against Norwich on Saturday.

According to The Telegraph’s report, Abraham is also set to be offered a new contract at Stamford Bridge worth a reported £100,000-a-week – doubling his current £50,000-a-week wages.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount have both recently signed improved deals with the west London outfit, clearly signalling the club’s trust in their younger stars.

Reece James is certainly a player of huge potential. At 6ft, the 19-year-old looks physically ready for the demands of the top-flight and it will be extremely interesting to see how he progresses in the first-team at Chelsea when he gets his chance.

Club stalwart Cesar Azpilicueta is firmly ahead of James in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge at the moment, so he may have to rely on getting minutes in the club’s less-prioritised cup fixtures at first. However, with Frank Lampard at the helm, it’s extremely likely that he’ll be given a fair chance to prove his worth in west London once he returns from injury, looking at the handling of Abraham and Mount.
