The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Thibaut Courtois to build a legacy to match Petr Cech. Cech enjoyed over a decade of success at Stamford Bridge, building quite the trophy cabinet along the way. From Premier Leagues to Champions Leagues, the goalkeeper achieved everything possible during his stint at Stamford Bridge.
Courtois, then, had some pretty big shoes to fill, yet he’s made a very good start to life in blue. He’s quickly become a fan favourite in the Transfer Tavern, and he’s quickly forcing his way up the table in terms of Europe’s most efficient shot-stoppers.
His contract situation, then, has unsurprisingly been concerning fans. His current deal is set to expire in 2019, meaning that in a year, he could well be able to negotiate an exit from London on a free transfer.
Fortunately, though, the Belgian has been discussing his future with the press, and it’s fair to say that his words will go down well amongst fans.
According to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur, Courtois has revealed that he is close to signing a new deal at Chelsea.
Thibaut Courtois on the contract talks: “A deal is close.” He urges Eden Hazard to sign a new deal too: “Do Eden and I encourage each other? Yes. He will say ‘if you sign, I will sign’ and I say the same to him.” #cfc pic.twitter.com/dKxoZWVksd

This is huge news for the Blues, as Courtois’ future is vitally important. He’s irreplaceable, and at 25-years-old, he’s young enough to have enough left in the tank to represent the Blues for the best part of a decade.
It’s timely, too, given his fine performance against Arsenal on Wednesday night. The Belgian was arguably Chelsea’s best player, and so Antonio Conte will be delighted that his goalkeeper is on course to remain at the club long-term.
If Chelsea are able to secure Courtois’ long-term future, the Belgian could go down as the Blues’ most important signing of the year.
The Belgian is so important to this team. Alongside the defenders in front of him, he’s a part of one of the Premier League’s best back-lines.
They need to tie this up as soon as possible.
