Chelsea remain confident in transfer pursuit

It's Wayne Rooney or bust Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left excited by reports from Mirror Football that the Stamford Bridge-based club are confident of signing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney during the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho is expected to submit a second bid of around £24 million this week and it is believed that United will accept a figure around the £30 million mark for the England international striker.

The former Real Madrid manager has admitted that Rooney is his prime summer target as he seeks a new striker after his emotional reunion at Stamford Bridge.

According to the paper, any transfer is more likely to go through if the Red Devils are successful in their pursuit of Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas with Chelsea expecting United to use positive PR to justify the possible departure of Rooney before the new season.

The 27-year-old former Everton man has become increasingly disillusioned with life at Old Trafford, annoyed at playing second fiddle to Dutch star Robin van Persie and consequently wants a summer move before the impending 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Despite this, David Moyes insists that Rooney will not be sold this summer, even though the club have no plans to offer the striker a new contract when it expires in two-years time. As one punter points out Mourinho is a man of his word and if he wants Rooney he’ll probably get him at considerable cost for his club.
