Chelsea remain keen on 6ft 3 stalwart despite renewal talks

The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern think this is a bit of a risky strategy…

Chelsea’s purported interest in Juventus stalwart Leonardo Bonucci was well documented over the summer, with Antonio Conte reportedly keen on the Italian defender.

A favourite for the new Blues boss, Bonucci was a key part of Conte’s managerial spell in Italy – and our landlord was touting him for a dominant spell in the Premier League had he made the move.

Whilst the move was expected in the Tavern, it never ended up happening – but according to the Times; the deal is far from dead.

The Times are reporting that Chelsea remain keen on Bonucci, with Conte still keen to add a bit of Italian steel to his faltering Chelsea defence.

Contrastingly, Director General of Juventus, Beppe Marotta, has recently claimed that there is “no concern on our part” with regards to the Italian’s future – perhaps suggesting that a move for Bonucci is unlikely.

Whether or not the deal will happen remains to be seen, but there definitely seems to be concrete interest from Chelsea’s end.

Our landlord does not think that it’s surprising either, considering Chelsea’s poor defensive record in recent weeks. He thinks they could really benefit from a defensive stalwart like Bonucci.

No nonsense defenders are a rare find these days – and Bonucci is definitely of that mould.
