Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are surprised to hear that their club is still chasing a big-name defender, despite handing their captain a new deal yesterday.
The Times states that Chelsea’s incoming boss Antonio Conte remains keen on bringing Leonardo Bonucci to the club from Juventus this summer, despite the Blues handing John Terry a one-year contract extension yesterday.
Terry’s new deal means the club’s longest-serving player, who first broke into the first-team in 1998, will remain at Stamford Bridge this summer, although with Conte still eyeing Bonucci it appears first-team football for the veteran centre-back will be limited.
35-year-old Terry will remain club captain next season but may find himself regularly out of the first-team picture, with Conte keen to improve a defensive line that was incredibly leaky during Chelsea’s poor season.
Chelsea’s quest to sign Bonucci may well be unsuccessful though, as the 29-year-0ld only penned a five-year deal at Juventus last year and our landlord believes he won’t want to give up European football.
Blues fans, should Terry remain a starter next season? Let us know in the comments below!
