The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are a nervous bunch right now…
Though they were a boisterous bunch last season, Chelsea’s lack of summer activity has left them feeling rather mellow, with the Blues struggling to compete in an increasingly difficult market.
Chelsea have landed a few big names, and they are sure to help Conte’s cause, but it is clear that more players are still needed. Fortunately, it appears as though the club are close to sealing another transfer.
As Don Balon notes, Sky Sports have recently reported Chelsea’s interest in Portugal defender Joao Cancelo, with the Blues said to have scouted him extensively as of late, but the Spanish publication has gone one step further on the matter.
According to Don Balon, Chelsea are edging closer to a move for Cancelo – with Antonio Conte clearly a big fan of the defender. The deal is described as being ‘about to close’, hinting that a move could be coming sooner rather than later.
A 23-year-old defender, Cancelo would be able to compete on the right-hand side of the Chelsea defence, offering valuable depth beyond Victor Moses for the Blues. Unlike Moses, he is a natural in the role, which Conte will be attracted to.
Chelsea have a serious lack of defensive depth, with Victor Moses currently Chelsea’s only real option on the right-hand side of the defence.
With Chelsea set to return to the Champions League this year, that will also bring with it an increased number of games, so in that sense, extra depth is very important. Chelsea’s needs go beyond that, though, with Moses not very strong defensively, and so with Chelsea likely to face off against some of Europe’s biggest sides, Cancelo could come in as a more reliable option at the back on a big European night.
In truth, this move makes a lot of sense, and Cancelo – who made 27 league starts last season – fits the bill perfectly.
