Optimism is high amongst the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern. After a slow start, the Blues are finally gaining some momentum in the Premier League, whilst a clash with Barcelona is on the horizon in the Champions League – leaving the Stamford Bridge faithful feeling rather excited.
However, a recent report from the Independent is likely to leave fans feeling rather downbeat. According to the Independent, Chelsea could be facing disappointment in their quest to land Juventus star Alex Sandro. Juventus, it is said, are refusing to let the defender leave mid-way through the season, and so it seems that as much as Chelsea might try, the Italian side won’t let Conte get his man.
It’s certainly a far from ideal start to the window for the Blues, with many of our resident Chelsea fans hoping that the disappointment of the summer window would be put behind them. Now, though, they are facing an eerily reminiscent scenario.
A new left-back is a key signing for the Blues, given the lack of depth that they have in the role at present. Marcos Alonso has been stellar, of course, but beyond the Spaniard, Chelsea have had to rely on Kenedy – who simply isn’t good enough yet.
Sandro, then, could have been considered a decent choice – giving Chelsea a lot of quality in the role – but now, Conte may have to look elsewhere. There is, of course, an entire month for this situation to change, but the Independent doesn’t seem to provide much chance of that being the case.
In terms of raw quality, Chelsea can’t get much better than Sandro, so if the Blues want to achieve the best possible team, this is obviously a disappointment.
That being said, Marcos Alonso has done well this year, and so Antonio Conte won’t be without a top option at the back if he isn’t able to land this deal.
Chelsea must not place all of their eggs in this basket, in case this situation doesn’t change, and so given this update, our resident Blues have already begun plotting and planning a list of alternatives.
