The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned at the state of their side’s defence…
At present, Antonio Conte has just Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses to call upon on each side of the defence, with the Blues still yet to add any reinforcements this summer.
It’s a pretty major problem for Conte, as at any one point he is just one major injury away from disaster.
Fortunately, it appears as though Chelsea have a plan to combat at least a part of this problem, with the Evening Standard reporting that the Blues are ready to step up their pursuit of Cedric Soares. The Southampton defender has impressed in recent years, and Chelsea are said to be optimistic that £20 million will be enough to get the deal done.
Soares has looked very good on the right-hand of the Southampton defence since moving to St Mary’s, with his solid defending and stellar offensive work proving vital for the Saints. Indeed, alongside Ryan Bertrand, Soares has formed a part of one of the Premier League’s best defences.
When you consider that, it makes Chelsea’s estimation of a £20 million move seem a little optimistic, especially in the modern market.
Soares certainly deserves the interest of a top side, and he would definitely fit the needs of the Blues.
Still, the Saints are unlikely to be willing to let him go, particularly for such a low fee, but stranger things have happened before.
Perhaps this could work out for Chelsea – what a bargain he would be.
