The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been very impressed with the form of Thibaut Courtois this season. The Belgian has emerged as one of Europe’s best shot-stoppers during his time in London, with his defensive record improving significantly under Antonio Conte.
It’s clear that he’s a player that Chelsea need to hold on to, and now it seems as though the club are pulling out all of the stops to make sure that happens. According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are ready to make Courtois the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world – with an offer of over £200,000-per-week in the offing.
It’s a move that would no doubt give Chelsea a major financial hit, but he’s a player that they must do all they can to hold on to. He’s a consistent member of the first team, he rarely suffers injuries, and he’s proven his quality over the last few years. With fantastic shot stopping, an aerial presence and leadership, there is nobody better to be between the sticks for the Blues than the Belgian.
His current deal ends at the end of next season, and so this is clearly a priority for the Blues, and with good reason. At 25-years-old, Courtois – who is rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt – is still young enough to man the net for the best part of a decade at Chelsea and for his country, Belgium.
This will be as important as any major big-money signing for Chelsea.
If they can convince him to sign it, that’s a major win for the Blues, and Antonio Conte will likely be absolutely delighted.
He’s quickly building a legacy to rival Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge.
