Chelsea reportedly set to make big transfer move after shock opening day defeat

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are still reeling after their side’s shock defeat to Burnley…

The Blues looked very poor against the Clarets, and whilst a spirited comeback – led by Alvaro Morata – nearly happened, the Blues eventually fell short on the opening day.

An early red card to Gary Cahill certainly impacted proceedings, but even with 10 men, Chelsea still should have had enough to beat the relegation candidates, and so the supporters in the pub are very disappointed this evening.

Chelsea, though, appear to be ready to do something about their lack of quality and depth, with the Mirror reporting that the club are plotting a £50 million+ move for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk.

Currently, out of the first team picture following a transfer request, van Dijk’s future still looks uncertain, and Chelsea look ready to capitalise.

Chelsea are expected to be heavily involved in transfer proceedings over the coming weeks, with a host of new talents needed.

Landlord’s Verdict

Virgil van Dijk is the sort of player that no team can say no to, having built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best defenders over the last couple of years.

However, in an era where spending is capped and Chelsea have been hesitant to spend big money, you have to question whether this is a wise move from the club. He’s clearly a top player, but could Chelsea’s needs be better served elsewhere?

With Luiz, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Rudiger and Christensen all available to fill in, do Chelsea really need another central defender? That’s up to Conte to decide.
