Metro provide a rather cheeky claim for us this morning here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Tottenham could well be about to show some interest in Chelsea’s Juan Mata.
The midfielder looks set to be on his way out of the club after failing to impress Jose Mourinho while not really getting a chance to show the ability that saw him win over fans and fellow professionals since his arrival in 2011 from Valencia.
After seeing Chelsea rather cheekily swoop for Willian when Spurs felt that they had the player secured, Andre Villas-Boas is keen to not only show Chelsea that they are not to be messed with but also to add a world class player like Mata to his ranks, softening the blow of losing Bale.
Chelsea meanwhile have refused to rule out the possibility of Mata joining Manchester United as part of a deal for England international Wayne Rooney, yet seem to be denying the fact that North London rivals Spurs are interested in the Spanish player.
As one of our punters quips, during AVB’s difficult time at Chelsea, he found an ally in Mata and allowed the creative midfielder to flourish.
Add to this the fact Mata is keen to play as much as possible in the season before the World Cup – something that does not look like happening under Mourinho – and a move could be on the cards.
Do Tottenham stand any chance of luring Juan Mata or is this simply media hype? Let us know your thoughts below.
