Chelsea has sent scouts to assess Gregory van der Weil as a host of top clubs looking to capture the signature of on of Europe’s hottest transfer targets.
The Dutch young player of the season has another two years on his contract but is ready to move and nearly did so following the 2010 World Cup but couldn’t agree terms with Bayern Munich. Renowned for his blistering runs up and down the flanks there has been reported interest from such clubs as Barcelona, Inter and Arsenal

Weil has come through the ranks at Ajax and they would demand at least €15 – 20 million for his services. It would be money well spent as the dual efforts of Cole and Weil up the left and right flanks respectively would be a terrifying ordeal for any defence. Bosingwa is not a bad player by any means but he lacks the pace and skill of Weil.
There is also the factor of longevity to consider – Weil is 23 which, all things being well, guarantees Chelsea at least 8 years of quality at right back. It would be interesting to see if the defensive aspects of his game could stand up to the physicality of the Premiership, even if the modern game demands more going forward from full backs rather than defensive work.
The problem lies with Man City if they achieve Champions League qualification and the incomprehensible amount of money they will spend as a result. Does Weil want prestige or money? If it’s the latter expect him to be donning sky blue in the not distant future.
