Chelsea see initial defender bid rejected, must pay £35m

ManolasChelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are groaning after it emerged that their quest to complete some deals for the summer early has hit a brick wall.

The Sun states Chelsea have seen a £26m bid for Roma defender Kostas Manolas rejected by the Serie A side, who could find themselves out of Champions League competition next season due to a dip in their campaign.

Roma were odds-on for the title in the first half of the season but Juventus’ revival has put the Turin giants back on course for another league crown, whilst Roma have also slipped below Napoli in the standings and face a battle to clinch third spot in the league.

Should Roma fail to land that position, or indeed exit the Champions League in the qualification stages, a mass exodus could occur and Chelsea will look to capitalise by swooping for the Greek international.

Roma themselves are open to a sale but will demand at least £35m to get a deal over the line.

Chelsea fans, should Manolas be your prime defensive target this summer? Let us know in the comments below!
