Barca set to lock horns once more with their Champions League nemesis, as Chelsea look to change tact next season.
It’s fair to say Chelsea aren’t frequently associated with youthful up and coming talents. Usually they move for players at the peak of their powers (or just past the peak of their powers) to add to their contingency of ever presents. However recently, with signings such as Juan Mata and David Luiz being prime examples, the club have looked to reduce the age of their experienced squad as they prepare for an inevitable new era at the club.
Though Villas Boas moved too quick to dismantle the influential spine to the side, there’s no doubt that the time will soon come to displace the Drogba’s and Lampard’s within their ranks. That’s why The Mirror’s claims that a bid could be lodged for Benfica’s Nelson Oliveira makes so much sense.
The 20 year old, who recently earned a call up to the senior Portugal side, is one of the continent’s finest prospects and could be tempted with the lure of a big team with ambitions to match for next season.
Whether Chelsea themselves will be classed under that category after the impending final against Bayern Munich is another matter entirely, but whichever way that encounter pans out it seems they’ll face stiff competition for their latest target from the side who they dumped out of the competition a few weeks ago.
Barcelona, still smarting from that loss and the exit of Pep Guardiola, will be seemingly pro-active this summer in an attempt to right the wrongs of this season. And Oliveira would certainly fit the bill, with his ability to play a variety of attacking positions likely to attract the Catalan giants as they scout out individuals capable of performing in their fluid system.
Though Barca are situated closer to his homeland, and are still regarded as the team to play for at this moment in time, the outcome of this transfer wrangle could yet be decided at the Allianz Arena. If Chelsea fail, they could be looking at a very different market in the summer.
