Spanish Radio network Cadena Ser reports Athletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero and Real Madrid’ Pepe are both being targeted by Chelsea. They claim Pepe’s future almost certainly lies at Stamford Bridge, despite Jose Mourinho’s pledge to rebuild his relationship with the defender, as Pepe still refuses to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.
With his contract set to expire in 2012, Real may be forced to sell their centre-back if he hasn’t signed a contract extension by the summer or risk losing him for nothing. With the Madrid outfit demanding around £20m for their man, Chelsea may opt to buy in the next window to avoid potentially losing out on the player.
Any move during the current window looks unlikely, particularly as the player is now sidelined with a hamstring injury for the next four weeks. However, they could complete a deal for other target Sergio Aguero before the transfer window closes. Aguero has actually just signed a contract extension at Athletico, yet the new deal has lowered his buy-out clause by €15m, alerting Chelsea to the possibility of a move. However, the La Liga outift would still refuse to do business for anything under £30m.
Given the choice, Carlo Ancelotti would probably rather sign a defender this month, although Pepe is certainly worth the wait. Meanwhile, long-term target Aguero could do very nicely.
