The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were not expecting this…
Charly Musonda was a revelation last season, with the young Chelsea midfielder embarking on his first loan spell away from Stamford Bridge. The loan, which was at Real Betis in La Liga, was a successful one – and Musonda quickly emerged as one of the league’s best young talents.
However, it has been quite the fall from grace for the young Belgian, and this season – he has floundered under the tutelage of Betis boss Victor Sanchez, and has made just 1 La Liga start so far this campaign.
Chelsea have been criticised in the past for the lack of attention that they pay to their loan stars, but it would appear as though they are keeping a watchful eye on Musonda – and it would seem that his lack of action has drawn the ire of the Chelsea brass.
According to AS, Musonda is currently in London – with Chelsea and Betis close to an agreement that would see his loan in Spain come to an end. It appears to be an agreement that suits both parties, with Musonda likely to continue his development back in the Premier League.
This is disappointing for the Chelsea fans in the Tavern, given just impressive Musonda was last season. He joined Betis on what was originally a 6-month loan deal in January – and went on to make 13 La Liga starts, impressing enough to warrant an extended deal.
Nonetheless, our landlord thinks that with Chelsea struggling for offensive depth – perhaps Musonda can find a role in the Blues’ first team.
