Chelsea fans have just started pouring into the Football Transfer Tavern this morning after spending last night celebrating their sides opening day win, and it looks like they might have even more to celebrate if this report is to be believed.
Chelsea’s 2-1 victory has given Blues fans a boost following a disappointing campaign last season, and whilst the victory did impress fans here in the Tavern, one issue was glaringly obvious.
Chelsea’s weakest area last season was without doubt their defence, and surprisingly it remains the only area that hasn’t been reinforced this summer, and this showed on the opening day.
Beyond the players selected by Antonio Conte, Chelsea had very few defensive options available to them beyond youth stars; and for a team keen to battle for the Premier League – that is simply not enough.
It appears that Antonio Conte is in agreement, with The Blues now linked with a new face – and for the first time this summer, it is a defender!
The player in question is long-term Liverpool target Jonas Hector, as Conte looks to provide back up to defensive stalwart Cesar Azpilicueta on the left hand side of the Chelsea defence.
The report by The Daily Mirror suggests that Conte is keen to bring the German defender to Stamford Bridge, and would like the deal wrapped up by the end of the transfer window.
What do you think Chelsea fans? Would he give Cesar Azpilicueta run for his money? What about Liverpool fans – are you disappointed that Chelsea may beat you to the defensive stalwart?
