There are suggestions in the Football Transfer Tavern today that Chelsea are set to lose out on yet another striker with Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez reportedly close to joining Fiorentina.
talkSPORT report that the forward is likely to become one of the first casualties of Pep Guardiola’s reign with the Champions League winners as he puts together a young attacking force headlined by Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze.
Mourinho is keen to have a powerful target man in his squad, in the role that Chelsea legend Didier Drogba used to fill at Stamford Bridge but it seems that he will have to switch attentions elsewhere with the 27-year-old Germany international prepared to move to the Serie A with Fiorentina.
The Viola are seeking a possible replacement for Arsenal and Juventus target Stevan Jovetic and are hopeful of securing Gomez for around £22 million to fill the substantial gap that the Montenegrin will leave behind him.
However Gomez’s agent Uli Ferber has gone some way to cool the link early today by saying: “”That’s not true.”
Despite confirming that no agreement was in place he did admit that his days at the Allianz Arena look numbered.
“[Finding a new club] is not going to be a major assignment, but one thing is for sure – he will only go to a club where he will be a first-choice striker.”
Mourinho has already lost out in his pursuit for Radamel Falcao who moved to French money-bags Monaco instead of Stamford Bridge while he faces stiff opposition from Manchester City to capture Edinson Cavani.
Are you gutted that Chelsea could miss out on Gomez or should Mourinho be looking at other targets? Let us know your thoughts below.
