The Football Transfer Tavern is packed this afternoon as news emerges from Mail Online that Chelsea are set to revive their interest in Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney by making a bid of around £40 million for the unsettled frontman.
United have already rejected an initial offer of £30 million from the Stamford Bridge club but after Blues boss Jose Mourinho made it clear that the 26-year-old remains his prime summer transfer target an increased offer is expected to be submitted.
Rooney would reportedly love the chance to make the switch to West London after becoming increasingly frustrated at playing second fiddle to Dutch star Robin van Persie at Old Trafford.
A move to Stamford Bridge would see the former Everton man become the main striker in Mourinho’s side taking the place of £50 million forward Fernando Torres.
Rooney is understood to have held positive talks with United and his former Everton boss about his future since returning to Old Trafford for training but speculation continues about a possible move to Chelsea that could could suit all parties.
Rooney is ready to make this first appearance in pre-season as United travel to Sweden on Tuesday to face AIK Stockholm, and then will be back at Old Trafford for Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla on Friday where his reception is likely to be mixed.
