Alan Nixon from The Mirror is causing quite a stir in the Football Transfer Tavern today.
The well-respected journalist has arrived in the bar to tell punters that Chelsea are set to win the race to sign Southampton’s teenage left back Luke Shaw, but only if they guarantee him regular first team football.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for a possible long-term replacement for Ashley Cole and it has long been thought in the tavern that the promising 18-year-old is top of his wishlist.
Now Nixon confirms this by suggesting that SW6 club will land Shaw if they can persuade him that a starting role will be available in Mourinho’s side.
Shaw has been monitored by a host of top clubs with Manchester United manager David Moyes a keen admirer, but is is understood that his main choice upon leaving St. Mary’s would be Chelsea, the team he supports.
Shaw’s possible arrival at the club could spell the end for 32-year-old Cole who will see his latest contract expire in the summer at Stamford Bridge with no signs of new talks.
The Saints starlet only recently signed a long-term deal to keep him at St. Mary’s but interest from the Blues and Mourinho could prove hard to resist for the boyhood Chelsea fan.
Any transfer for Shaw could see young defender Ryan Bertrand moving to Liverpool in January with Brendan Rodgers reportedly eyeing up the England Under-21 international.
Will Shaw now make the switch to Chelsea? Let us know your thoughts below.
